Port smith lagoon
Hi back again.
I love the holidays because you get to go away.
This time the family went to Port Smith Lagoon. My dad and I went fishing every day.
First day we went fishing in the lagoon and caught 4 golden trevally, 3 bream, a cod, salmon, fingermark and a jack. We mainly caught the fish in various rock pools around the lagoon. It was too windy to go out the front, but it is lots of fun driving around the lagoon.
Second day was still too windy to go out the front, so we stayed in the lagoon again looking for good spots for garfish to use as bait for the sailfish competition which starts mid August.
We didn’t find any but we caught a salmon and 2 jacks. Most of our fish were donated to the Caravan Park to cook up on the Thursday night fish and chip night in aid of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. If ever you are considering going to Port Smith try to get there on a Thursday so that you can enjoy the great feed for only $5 with all money going to a great cause. They also have a local band playing and raffles and games for all.
Next day we did an exploratory drive to the local creeks. Although we didn’t catch anything because we were too late for the tide, it was great have a look around for the next day. We did catch a 4 foot long long tom.
So we set out early on our last day to hit the creeks, but all good plans don’t always go the way you hope and we came home fishless! But it was fun trying.
I highly recommend Port Smith for a few days fishing. You can catch just as much off the shore as you can in a tinny. Most of the people staying there just take a line down to the lagoon and try their luck. You can catch so many different things off the shore from Whiting, garfish, salmon, trevally, cod and even the odd mortan bay bug!
I found the bug when I was about 6 years old walking around on the rocks and found this thing. My dad was very impressed, but told me I wouldn’t like to eat it. So Mum and Dad had a nice entree that night and I still keep an eye out for more Bugs in the lagoon.
See you on the water
