ROEY LOOK THE GOODS

After round 2 of the Auslec 20/20 cup, Roebuck are the only unbeaten team and look odds on at this stage to take out the inaugural 20/20 competition.

Game 1 on Sunday saw the Mangrove win their first game in a tight encounter over the Wanderers who improved considerably from their poor effort last Sunday. The Wanderers batted first with big hitting Scotty Gardiner getting the Wanderers off to a flying start. They continued to bat steadily though out their innings finishing on 7 wickets for 111 runs from their 20 overs. Tyrone Garstone top scored with 26, while Domenic Tracey made 21 and Gardiner 20. For the Mangrove Farley Murton took 3 for 15, Tim Clear 2 for 29, Dean Holder 1 for 22 and David Bear 1 for 26.

In reply the Mangrove got off to a great start with openers Holder and David Mulheron putting on 61 in 11 overs for the first wicket against the experienced Wanderers bowlers. Although the Mangrove took until the 3rd ball of the 20th over to overhaul the Wanderers score, they had wickets in hand and always looked as though they would get the runs, the Mangrove’s final score 3 for 117. Holder top scored with 31 while Mulheron made 29, Mark Freeman 24 and Farley Murton 20 not out. For the Wanderers Wilkerson took 1 for 14 and Brad Tolentino 1 for 21.

Game 2 on Sunday, saw the winners from round 1 of the 20/20 competition, the Roey and the Dirty Dozen lock horns. The Dozen won the toss and batted first, they lost early wickets and were in dire straights at 5 for 36 after 9 overs. A rear guard effort led by Ben (done a hammy) Westlake enabled the dozen to reach 7 for 95 after their 20 overs. Westlake top scored with 24 while Mick Fazio made 19 and Jason Inglis 13.
For the Roey, Rhys Egan took 3 for 13, Seabrook 1 for 10, Lynton Phillipson 1 for 11 and Jarrod Withers 1 for 22.

The Roey started their innings slowly but openers Joel Unicomb and Daniel Skinn soon found the boundaries and compiled 41 in 6 overs for the 1st wicket. Although the Dozen bowlers toiled manfully they often bowled too short and were wayward. Although losing quick wickets as they approached the Dozen score, the Roey passed the Dozen total in the 17th over before going on to amass 5 for 123 after their 20 overs. Unicomb top scored with 36 while Withers remained on 23 not out, Egan made 17 and Skinn 16. For the Dozen, Scott batt was clearly the best with the ball taking 2 for 15, Rhys Colreavy also bowled well with 1 for 20 while Warren Sturrock also took 1 for 20.

The Auslec 20/20 Cup will comprise 6 qualifying games during July and August with the final played on the 23rd of August at 2pm at Male Oval between the 2 top placed teams. Last weekend in Round 1 of the AUSLEC 20/20 Cup, Roebuck 177 defeated Mangrove 165 and the Dirty Dozen 123 defeated the Wanderers 63. After the first 2 rounds, Roey are on top of the ladder with 2 wins while the Dozen are second on percentage with one win from Mangrove also on one win and the Wanderers on the bottom yet to win a game.

To avoid Kimberely Cup racing next Sunday, 20/20 cricket moves to Saturday next week with the Dozen taking on the Mangrove at 10:30 am and the Roey tackling the Wanderers at 2pm.
